Bears LearnToFish

Intimate Bear Viewing - Bears learn to fish

During salmon season Solomon Gulch, just outside the city of Valdez (south-central Alaska), is a great place to fish! Not just for people but also for the bears living in this area. In the months of June and July the cove, where Solomon Creek falls into the lake, is filled with salmon resting up before starting the final part of their long journey upstream from the ocean to the waters where they were born.Bears frequent this spot gorging on salmon. They build up layers of fat before beginning their long winter sleep and on one evening a mother bear brought her three cubs to the cove and taught them how to fish, while they stood on the rocky banks watching, learning and waiting for dinner!
