Alaska Flora - an explosion of colours
Click on an image in the webgallery to view a fullscreen impression
The flowering season in Alaska is very short, but it brings a wealth of many colours throughout the country: from the vast tundra to the verges along the highways. When the days get longer from May onwards, many types of flowers start to bloom!
Forget me not
The Forget me not is Alaska's national flower.
Fireweed (epibolium angustifolium) grows up to 1.5 meters high and turns highway verges and hills into a blaze of bright pink or purple. Fireweed, probably the most common plant in Alaska, gets its name not from its colour, but from its ability to renew itself quickly after a fire, because the deep roots can always withstand a fire.
